Welcome to The Apartment Homestead! I’m Shaina, and I’m here to help you achieve your homesteading dreams, whether you’ve got the homestead or not.

Homestead wishing
Have you ever wished you could fast-forward a few years to a time when you can afford the perfect property? For years now, I’ve dreamed of owning a sweet little farmhouse and acres of land filled with chickens, bees, goats, flowers, miniature dairy cows, and enormous vegetable gardens. My Pinterest boards and favorite Instagram accounts are testament to those goals.
But as a librarian in my early thirties, land-ownership is outside my financial reach for now, so I share a condo with two lovely roommates in Provo, Utah. The closest I get to ranching is herding my two cats away from each other when they’re fighting (and everyone knows what they say about herding cats).
Live your dreams today
If you’re like me, you might be disheartened, feeling like homesteading is a distant dream. For a long time, I thought homesteading required the land, the animals, the orchards, and the gardens I’d always pictured. But I’m realizing homesteading isn’t about stuff, and it isn’t about ownership.
Homesteading is a state of mind.
It’s a way of life.
It’s a choice.
I can be a homesteader here and now, and so can you.
And now I have a plan, The Apartment Homestead Project. Every week for the next three years, I’ll be learning a different skill every homesteader ought to know. Gardening, homestyle cooking, old-fashioned skills – all of these actions are absolutely within my reach and yours.
So whether you already have that plot of land, you have a tiny yard, or, like me, you have no yard at all, you can be a homesteader, starting today.
Let’s go on this journey together.
What you can expect from The Apartment Homestead
Preparing and preserving food from scratch doesn’t need to be a mysterious process. I’ll be sharing treasured family recipes, guidance on traditional cooking techniques, and new twists on classic recipes.
It might sound crazy, but you don’t need a garden to garden! I don’t have a yard, and an HOA controls my landscaping, but I’m determined to be a gardener anyway. With a small community garden plot and all the containers my front steps can hold, I’m growing my own food. I’m excited to help you do the same.
Homesteading requires a wide variety of hands-on abilities that modern life doesn’t always prioritize. From milking a goat to getting out of debt to making safe cleaning supplies, there’s a lot we can learn together.
Are you a new blogger? As I get The Apartment Homestead up and running, I’ve learned all I can about content creation, SEO, marketing, and social media, and I’m eager to share what I discover each month.
